Shelter Manager - Job Description

September, 1995

Location: La Honda Shelter

Reports to: American Red Cross Bay Area (ARCBA) Mass Care Coordinator, La Honda Incident Commander and N.E.S.T. Command/Communications Director

Description: Provide a safe, secure shelter for disaster victims and workers in accordance with La Honda Region N.E.S.T. Shelter Handbook and subject to approval of ARCBA.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Establish shelter in accordance with La Honda Region N.E.S.T. Shelter Handbook.

2) Determine what staffing level the shelter requires and obtain personnel through N.E.S.T. Command/Communications.

3) Provide training for shelter workers.

4) Coordinate, supervise and manage all shelter functions and activities in accordance with applicable health standards, La Honda Region N.E.S.T. Shelter Handbook and subject to approval of ARCBA.

5) Supervise shelter staff and assist in resolving resource, logistic or shelteree problems that may occur.

6) Oversee closing of shelter in accordance with La Honda Region N.E.S.T. Shelter Handbook and subject to approval of ARCBA..

7) Prepare necessary reports regarding shelter activities as outlined in La Honda N.E.S.T. Shelter Handbook.

Skill/Work Requirements:

1) Supervisory experience.

2) ARC Mass Care I & II courses. ARC Shelter Operations Workshop and Shelter Problem Solving are also helpful.

3) School administration or faculty is preferred.

 

Shelter Maintenance Manager - Job Description

September, 1995

Location: La Honda Shelter

Reports to: Shelter Manager

Description: Maintain state of cleanliness and repair in the shelter and provide drinking water for shelterees.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Arrange for drinking water for shelter in accordance with applicable health standards and the La Honda Region N.E.S.T. Shelter Handbook.

2) Inspect sanitary facilities and construct emergency toilets if required in accordance with applicable health standards and the La Honda Region N.E.S.T. Shelter Handbook.

3) Maintain inventory of cleaning equipment, toilet paper etc. for shelter.

4) Recruit and supervise shelterees to clean shelter.

5) Make repairs to shelter as required.

6) Arrange for solid waste disposal from shelter site in accordance with applicable health standards and the La Honda Region N.E.S.T. Shelter Handbook.

Skill/Work Requirements:

1) Supervisory experience.

2) Handy-person experience.

3) Good problem solving skills.

 

Shelter Health Manager - Job Description

September, 1995

Location: La Honda Shelter

Reports to: Shelter Manager and American Red Cross Bay Area (ARCBA) Disaster Health Services Officer

Description: Protect health, treat minor illnesses and injuries, prevent disease and maintain sanitation standards in shelter in accordance with applicable health standards, the La Honda Region N.E.S.T. Shelter Handbook and subject to approval of ARCBA.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Establish and maintain first aid/health services area within shelter in accordance with La Honda Region N.E.S.T. Shelter Handbook and subject to Red Cross regulations.

2) Determine first aid and medical supplies required.

3) Determine what medical skills may be needed and those that exist within the shelterees.

4) Address special medical or dietary needs of shelterees.

5) Conduct sick call hours at least daily.

6) Plan for transfer of patients to regular health facilities as necessary.

7) Plan for isolation of persons with suspected communicable diseases.

8)Oversee sanitary conditions of food and toilet facilities.

9) Coordinate or provide psychological first aid.

10) Report on shelter health activities in accordance with La Honda Region N.E.S.T. Shelter Handbook and subject to Red Cross regulations.

Skill/Work Requirements:

1) ARC Disaster Health Services nurse.

Shelter Food Manager - Job Description

September, 1995

Location: La Honda Shelter or La Honda Fire House

Reports to: Shelter Manager

Description: Provide a balanced diet to shelter residents, staff, and other disaster workers located at the Shelter and at other locations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Supervise menu planning and select recipes with the assistance of ARC nutrition guidelines. Adapt to facility and equipment available.

2) Supervise food workers.

3) Determine work schedules and maintain necessary records for food workers.

4) Provide training for food workers.

5) Maintain supplies of food, plates, utensils, cups etc.

6) Assure meals are prepared and served in a clean and sanitary manner.

7) Supervise food storage.

8) Maintain inventory control records.

9) Maintain waste control.

10) Prepare necessary reports regarding meals served, invoices etc. as outlined in La Honda Region N.E.S.T. Shelter Handbook.

1) Supervisory experience in a related food industry

 

Food Service Server - Job Description

Location: La Honda Shelter and/or La Honda Fire House

Reports to: Shelter Food Manager

Description: Serve food to shelter residents, staff and other disaster workers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Serve food in accordance with health standards. Adapt to facility and equipment available.

2) Maintain availability of plates, utensils, cups, napkins for people being fed.

3) Determine if assistance will be required and recruit needed staff.

4) Maintain waste control.

Skill/Work Requirements:

1) Experience in a related food industry

2) Flexibility.

3) Experience in large scale food serving.

4) Supervisory experience.

 

Food Service Preparer - Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Prepare selected recipes in accordance with health standards. Adapt to facility and equipment available.

3) Determine if assistance will be required and recruit needed staff.

4) Assist if required with serving of food.

Food Service Planner - Job Description

Location: La Honda Shelter or La Honda Fire House

Reports to: Shelter Food Manager

Description: Plan menus, select recipes and determine supply requirements to feed shelter residents, staff and other disaster workers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Plan menus and select recipes with assistance of ARC nutrition guidelines. Adapt to facility and equipment availability.

2) Determine food requirements for menu, recipe and number of people being fed. Adjust recipes and menus for food availability.

3) Advise shelter management of food requirements and time required for meal preparation.

Dormitory Manager - Job Description

Location: La Honda Shelter

Reports to: Shelter Manager

Description: Sets up dormitory and provides shelterees with cots, blankets and other items available..

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Obtain cots and blankets and arrange in dormitory section of shelter.

2) Assist Shelter Manager with his/her regular duties.

3) Disassemble cots and blankets and place in storage when no longer required.

Skill/Work Requirements:

1) Good organizational skills.

2) Supervisory experience.

3) Good problem solving skills.

4) Ability to work under time pressure.

5) Good interactive people skills.

 

Child Care Supervisor - Job Description

Reports to: Shelter Manager or N.E.S.T. Command/Communications Director

Description: Arrange and provide child care for working and resting parents.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Establish area where infants and pre-school children can be separated from shelterees.

2) Obtain and maintain inventory of toys, games and cartoon-type videotapes.

3) Determine if assistance will be required and recruit needed staff.

4) Brief staff and assign tasks and duties.

5) Maintain log of children cared for with written parental consent.

6) Maintain inventory of equipment borrowed.

7) Assist Shelter Recreation Manager

Shelter Registration Manager - Job Description

September, 1995

Location: La Honda Shelter

Reports to: Shelter Manager

Description: Ensure all shelterees are registered into and out of the shelter.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Establish and operate shelter registration center in accordance with La Honda Region N.E.S.T. Shelter Handbook.

2) Greet shelterees as they arrive

3) Keep statistics on numbers of shelterees.

4) Maintain the Bulletin Board of information.

5) Check shelterees out as they leave shelter.

6) Obtain information from media sources and share with shelter population.

7) Prepare necessary reports regarding shelterees as outlined in La Honda N.E.S.T. Shelter Handbook.

Skill/Work Requirements:

1) Good clerical skills.

2) Ability to work under time pressure.

3) Good organizational skills.

4) Good interactive people skills.

 

Shelter Recreation Manager - Job Description

September, 1995

Location: La Honda Shelter

Reports to: Shelter Manager

Description: Arrange and provide supervised play for children and adults.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Obtain and maintain inventory of equipment and supplies for recreation.

2) Establish system for checking out equipment, books and games.

3) Arrange for use of TV, VCR and videotapes.

4) Announce and post organized recreational activities.

5) Conduct earthquake and fire drills.

Skill/Work Requirements:

1) Supervisory experience.

2) Child care or recreation experience
