PART 2 - REGISTERING VOLUNTEERS
Please Note: Any documents not available at this Website are located in the Volunteer Kit or in NEST file cabinet at the La Honda firehouse.
A. Assigning volunteers as they become available.
1) As volunteers arrive, ask them to review the 1-Line Job Description Listposted on the wall. If they have a preference, make every effort to place them in the position they want.
2) Ask volunteers to complete the Volunteer Intake Form. Give them a Volunteer Safety Tips sheet and ask them to read it before they leave the Volunteer Registration Center.
3) Review the skills listed on the Volunteer Intake Form. If the volunteer has a preference as to the position he/she will do, have him/her read the Detailed Job Description and assign him/her to that position if possible. If the volunteer has no preference, utilize the Skills Vs. Jobs Database Printout to match the skills required by a position with those possessed by the volunteer. Always have the volunteer read the Detailed Job Description before assigning him/her to a position.
4) As positions are filled, remove those positions from the available list on both the 1-Line Job Description List and the Skills Vs. Jobs Database Printout. Keep in mind that workers will need to be relieved or replaced over time. Always check with the volunteer supervisor (or other person requesting volunteer assistance) before removing a position from the job lists.
5) Explain to the volunteer where and to whom to report. Give the volunteer a Map of La Honda, and a Volunteer Time Sheet. Ask the volunteer to return the Volunteer Time Sheet to the Volunteer Registration Center at the end of the volunteer assignment. (The Volunteer Time Sheet is important for us to determine the extent to which our population was required and able to help itself. This information could be used to obtain additional emergency preparation and response resources for our area.)
6) Issue the volunteer a Spontaneous Volunteer Identification Card that he/she should keep throughout the volunteer assignment. This also should be returned to the Volunteer Registration center at the end of the volunteer assignment. The Identification Card should be completed and signed before the volunteer leaves the Volunteer Registration Center. The card may be required to obtain access to the volunteer assignment location and should be used to identify the volunteer to the volunteer supervisor.
