PART 1 - ESTABLISHING A VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION CENTER
Please Note: Any documents not available at this Website are located in the Volunteer Kit or in NEST file cabinet at the La Honda firehouse.
When the need for spontaneous volunteers (henceforth referred to as "volunteers") becomes apparent or the services of volunteers are offered, a Volunteer Registration Center should be immediately set up in close proximity to the La Honda Emergency Operations Center (if possible and practical) by the Volunteer Manager:
A. Arranging volunteer registration and check-in center.
1. Set up 2 tables (ideally, in an "L" shape) and several chairs for you and volunteers to sit during the assignment process. These should be located centrally, but with enough space to allow foot traffic. Also, efforts should be made to maximize wall space available for posting information etc.
B. Hanging signs designating Volunteer Registration Center
1) Remove Signs file from Volunteer Kit and hang appropriate signs on front of the building being used to register volunteers and inside to direct people to your location.
2) Hang appropriate signs at other locations (Post Office, Fire House, Cuesta Guild House, La Honda Shelter etc.) when time permits or assign a volunteer to do so.
3) Hang 1-Line Job Description List on wall by entrance to Volunteer Center with the signs "Volunteer, Please Read" and "Can You Help"?.
C. Compiling list of available jobs.
1) As positions become available (or as a need for help is recognized), indicate them on the 1-Line Job Description List. Use pencil or post-it note type markers. If the job is not on the list, add it to the bottom, with a 1-line job description and the position of the person to whom the volunteer will report.
2) Complete a Volunteer Request Form for each position available and add the request to the Volunteer Request Record.
3) For ease of use, indicate available positions on the Skills Vs. Jobs Database Printout in pencil or with a post-it note type marker.
