5.0 Victim Assistance

 

Please Note: Any documents not available at this Website are located in the NEST file cabinet at the La Honda firehouse.

  1. Check for medical or first aid needs of victims.
  2. If victims have medical or first aid needs, assign qualified NEST personnel to care for victim. Check first aid certification of NEST personnel prior to assignment. If necessary, NEST personnel should call EMT, firefighters or EMS system for assistance.
  3. Check whether victim is cold or wet; assign NEST personnel to care for victim. Blankets are stored in shipping container in front of firehouse and in shipping container at La Honda Elementary School. Clothing is stored in shipping container in front of firehouse. Clothing is sorted by item. Children’s clothing is stored separately.
  4. Record disbursements made.
  5. Check whether victim is hungry; assign NEST personnel to care for victim.
  6. If no NEST personnel are available, direct victim to kitchen. If circumstances allow, accompany victim and assist him/her.
  7. If kitchen is not operational, assist victim to whatever extent is possible.
  8. If further assistance is required, call Red Cross or other outside organization and request victim assistance.
  9. Explain the situation to the Red Cross representative and tell them that the Incident Commander has requested Red Cross assistance.
  10. If victims need shelter, make every effort to have them self-transport to the shelter site.
