9. Handling a Disaster - Followup
The aftermath of a disaster can be a time of much psychological stress for a neighborhood and its residents. The Captain provides needed support and guidance to the residents in recovering from a disaster. The specific ways of performing this function will vary widely, with a few suggestions listed below.
In addition to recovery from a disaster, this period is an important time to take a retrospective view of the activities during a disaster, and identify ways to improve preparedness. In addition, replenishing any disaster material, recruiting additional volunteers for N.E.S.T., and other similar tasks must be done -- before another disaster strikes! Other community activities, even a party or other function, can help tie the community together and encourage the needed support between the residents to deal wit the disaster as a community.
9.1.1. Remind all neighbors of the importance of taking photos or videos of all valuables for insurance documentation.
9.1.2. Remind neighbors to keep repair supply receipts and to take photos or videos of any property damage for damage assistance applications and insurance claims.
