To prepare for a potential disaster, NEST focused on several areas:
Recognizing that after a disaster some NEST responders
might be out of the La Honda area or unable to respond, one additional manual
was written. The NEST Operations Manual (To see a copy of the Operations
Manual, click here.)
consists of a series of one or two page
instruction sheets to help any NEST responder perform any activity. These
instruction sheets are very specific for disaster response in La
Honda.
Along with establishing the procedures that are reflected in the above manuals, NEST has sponsored training of both NEST responders and other residents in First Aid, CPR, Red Cross Shelter Operations, Red Cross Mass Care, Red Cross Damage Assessment, Light Search and Rescue, Incident Command System and Amateur Radio Licensing.
Procedures and manuals are good tools but practicing
skills during periodic drills are also an important part of NEST disaster
preparation. One of the most enjoyable drills was held jointly with the La
Honda Fire Brigade and involved responding to winter storms.
