NEST, the La Honda Neighborhood Emergency Services Team, was established by the La Honda Fire Brigade after the Loma Prieta Earthquake when local residents (like the residents of many other San Francisco Bay Area communities) realized that, in a major disaster, outside assistance (from the government or relief organizations) might not be able to arrive for several days or possibly up to a week. During those days, people would have to rely on their personal and local resources for food, shelter and even medical assistance.
With this in mind, the La Honda Fire Brigade began surveying
the local resources: the La Honda Elementary School,
the churches, the facilities of the Sheriff's Department and the Department
of Roads, the County Parks, the local convenience store as well as the skills,
equipment and supplies of the residents themselves. (To see
a copy of the resources survey, click here.)
Also surveyed were the needs of the community
including not only the residents with special medical or other needs but also
the neighborhoods of La Honda that, due to their geographic locations or
geologic features, would require special attention during a disaster. The
American Red
Cross Bay Area Chapter was then contacted to help train a group of
disaster responders who would be able to use the available resources to assist
those residents who needed help.
La Honda NEST has been in existence for 16 years. It has served the La Honda community during one major and several minor disasters. This Website was written to inform people about La Honda NEST and to make available to anyone either within and outside of La Honda the documents and procedures that have been written and the lessons that we have learned.
